Are Fresh Scents® Sachets Safe for Pets?

Quick Answer

Fresh Scents® sachets are safe to use in homes with pets. However, pets—especially cats—have much more sensitive noses than humans and may react differently to fragrances. We recommend keeping sachets sealed and out of reach, and consulting your veterinarian if you have concerns about specific scents.

Pets and Fragrance: What You Should Know

Your dog or cat experiences the world through scent far more intensely than you do. Humans have about 5 million olfactory receptors in our noses. Compare that to dogs, who have a whopping 300 million olfactory receptors. Cats are also pretty impressive, with around 80 million. That means what smells pleasant to you may be overwhelming—or irritating—to your pet.

It is important to know that even though a scent (or method of dispensing it) is safe for you or even a small child, it doesn't mean that it'll necessarily be safe for, on, or even around your cats and dogs.

Cats vs. Dogs: Sensitivity Matters

Cats are even more sensitive to essential oils than dogs  because they lack certain liver enzymes needed to process some fragrance compounds. Dogs tend to be more tolerant, but can still have sensitivities depending on the scent and their individual health.

Our fragrance formulations follow global safety guidelines set by the International Fragrance Association (IFRA), and our sachets are phthalate-free—phthalates are one of the most toxic chemicals found in artificial fragrances that are perilously unhealthy to dogs, cats and humans as well.

Best Practices for Pet Owners

  • Keep sachets sealed. Our sachets are designed to diffuse fragrance through the envelope—never open them.
  • Place sachets out of reach. Curious pets may chew or ingest sachets if they can access them. Tuck them inside drawers, closets, or areas your pet can't get to.
  • Watch for signs of sensitivity. Common allergy symptoms such as a runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing may indicate your pet is reacting to a fragrance. If you notice these signs, remove the sachet and give your pet access to fresh air.
  • Ensure ventilation. Use sachets in well-ventilated spaces, especially if you have birds or pets with respiratory sensitivities.

When in Doubt, Ask Your Vet

We know how much you love your pets—we're pet owners too. While our sachets are safe for use in homes with animals, every pet is different. If your pet has known sensitivities, allergies, or health conditions, consult your veterinarian before introducing any new fragrance products into your home.
