No. Fresh Scents® does not use vermiculite from the contaminated Libby, Montana mine, which closed in 1990. Our suppliers use stringent testing to ensure our vermiculite is free from asbestos and other contaminants.

The concern about vermiculite and asbestos stems from a specific mine near Libby, Montana, which operated from the 1920s until 1990. That mine was the source of over 70 percent of all vermiculite sold in the United States from 1919 to 1990. US EPA Unfortunately, the vermiculite from Libby was contaminated with asbestos US EPA—a naturally occurring deposit at that particular site.
Pure vermiculite is not dangerous. Intermountain Histories The contamination was specific to the Libby mine, which has been closed since 1990. There are no other known risks associated with vermiculite from other sources.
