Can I Compost My Fresh Scents® Sachet?
Quick Answer
Yes, Fresh Scents® sachets are 100% biodegradable and can be composted—with a few guidelines to keep in mind.
What's in the Sachet
Each sachet consists of a paper envelope filled with vermiculite (a natural mineral) and fragrance oil. All of these materials will break down naturally over time. You'll notice a 100% biodegradable stamp on every envelope.
Composting Guidelines
While our sachets are compost-friendly, there are a few things to consider before tossing one in the pile:
Wait until the fragrance has fully faded.
We recommend waiting at least 9 months from the manufacture date (printed on the back of the sachet) before composting. This helps ensure the fragrance has dissipated and won't leech into soil or nearby waterways.
Don't use the compost on edible plants.
If your compost will be used on gardens or vegetation for human or animal consumption, we'd suggest keeping sachets out of that mix. Trace amounts of fragrance could affect the flavor of your produce—and nobody wants lavender-scented tomatoes.
Skip the burn pile.
If you use a burning method for compost, we don't recommend adding sachets. Stick to natural decomposition instead.
The Easy Option
Not a composter? No problem. Because our sachets are biodegradable, you can simply dispose of them in your regular trash and they'll break down over time on their own.
